It's certainly tough starting the week on Sept. 11...so many painful memories come to mind as I remember the heros from 9/11. Listening to the radio on the way to work they replayed the words of a local man who was in the first tower to be hit...very affecting. We must never forget (and do all we can to make sure it doesn't happen again!). Our thoughts are with all of you who lost loved ones on 9/11.
On to some happier thoughts...last week I was asked to mention the new Civil Engineering Community for all of you who are into dirt (you know who you are). Lots of coolio information including some great tips and tricks are waiting for you there! Be sure to check it out and make it a regular blog stop throughout the week. I love all the "Wicked Cool" Tips he has up there (does Matt Murphy know you are using the phrase "Wicked Cool"? ). You Matt Murphy fans know that of which I speak...
AutoCAD Hip Tip for "REALLY" cleaning out your drawing:
Here's another great tip from James Maeding for those of you who find your drawings are still going slowly even after a PURGE. You think you've cleaned up everything you don't need from your drawing file and yet it still chugs along slowly...you don't get paid by the hour so this is driving you crazy! Perhaps you didn't actually get everything out of your drawing - you might need to purge your drawing of all unused application ID's! The standard PURGE dialog won't let you do this - you have to use the command line version of the PURGE to get rid of these pests! How do we get to the command line version of the PURGE command? By putting a dash in front of it...
Command: -PURGE
Enter type of unused objects to purge
[Blocks/Dimstyles/LAyers/LTypes/MAterials/Plotstyles/SHapes/textSTyles/Mlinestyl
es/Tablestyles/Visualstyles/Regapps/All]: R
You want to select "Regapps"...this could potentially make your CAD life so very much better with your nice new squeeky clean drawing.
Now if this is a real problem for you (lots of apps in many drawings to PURGE - an epidemic!), you might want to take a much faster route that doesn't require you to open each drawing to purge those pesky apps...James (along with Clayton Hotson) has written a fabulous routine that does a much better (and faster) job of extermination. You can find his nifty PurgeIDs app at his website - CAD Thinking. Rumor has it this routine is 100 times faster than anything else you've used and it's very very stable! You'll also find some other extremely cool downloads up there as well.
So a great big thanks to James for helping all of us cleanse our drawing files! You rock!
